Research shows that homoeopathic remedies have no more effectiveness for acute medical conditions than placebo. It also shows that it is as effective as placebo for dealing with the lack of motivation and depression that comes with chronic conditions that are untreatable.
The principle of homeopathy is that a small amount of the substance that aggravates a chronic psychological condition can in fact reduce the symptoms. While the homoeopathic remedies on the market are no better than placebo, this principle is used in modern science to make vaccines for instance.
Additive disorders are often considered chronic, usually because it is difficult for medical practitioners to delve into peoples mind to reverse the trauma causing the addition. Something I am hoping to change with my research.
Any addition to a substance is difficult to control, even with strong will power. So I would like other scientists to research and develop a medicine that works as follows:
- The medicine slowly releases the substance the person is addicted to at a level the body can tolerate, and then slowly reduce this as the body rejects the substance.
- The medicine creates a discomforting feeling in the person with the addiction when they consume more of the substance than the drug would on its own. This acts as ‘negative reinforcement’ to help the person give up.
- During the time they are taking the medicine they could be receiving talk therapy to overcome the anxieties they normally take the substance to alleviate, or use an implementation of ‘MEDIAT’ a system I am developing that helps people manage their anxiety and attention focus.
So as you can see, the principles of homoeopathy are not completely flawed, only the implementations currently available on the high street.
